“Professional Training is SO Critical!”

Whether you are a Law Enforcement, EMS, Fire or Corrections Agency, or a Business, Religious, Community or Civic Organization, Professional Training should be extremely important to you. As the media spotlight and external, independent investigations are increasingly focused on what training and safety measures were taken prior to the actions of your employees or members, your reputation, community trust and monetary liability may depend on your ability to show you provided appropriate professional training prior to an incident.

For Police Officers, Deputy Sheriffs, EMS, Firefighters and 9-1-1 Telecommunicators, continuing, developmental training is a necessity. As the spiral of media frenzy builds after an incident and during an external, independent investigation's in-depth review into the actions of each person involved, one of the major areas of concern becomes the question of what training and security measures were provided. They will not only look at the training provided to the individuals who were involved, but they will look at the culture of the agency's commitment to providing continuing and up-to-date training on a variety of current and hot-button topics. Will your agency or organization be able to show it provided professional training and safety measures? Which appears better under media scrutiny or an external, independent investigation, providing your employees with a mix of professional training and safety evaluations by outside companies and your own staff, Or just having your employees trained in-house?

While Public Safety Agencies are the current focus of the media attention, there is also an upswing in attention on what businesses, churches and other organizations are doing to keep their employees, congregations and members informed and safe. While any event that results in the injury or death of your employees, congregation or members will be tragic in an of itself, the media attention and bad-press can be like pouring salt into an open wound. This is especially true, if they find a lack of training or safe-guards by the establishment in-charge.

Even when the media and investigations settle down, you may be looking at one or more civil liability actions as those injured or the family of anyone who died look for monetary compensation. In determining liability and amounts to award, juries may look at the following factors (and many others involving training):

  • * Did the persons involved received training that was professionally developed, current and instructed by subject matter experts

  • * Did the persons involved received training that was relevant to their actual position and assignment

  • * Did the persons involved received training that used generic materials created by persons outside the profession and lacking a point of reference

  • * Did the persons involved received training that was regular, job-specific training beyond any required certifications or re-certifications
